Since he began as a soloist, Ricky Martin has become one of the most popular, award-winning and concerted artists, not only in Latin America, but also in the United States, where he later became known as an actor in the eternal "General Hospital", one of the most highly rated and longest-running television series. The experience from "General Hospital" evidently turned out to be a fruitful one for him, although he believes that it is a stage that he has surpassed.

"Who could complain about having spent an hour a day for three years on (North) American television. To introduce myself and become know, it was good; even today, not being on the show, I meet people on the street who ask me when I will return. I don't believe that I'll do it. I think that, modesty aside, I am at another level. I have made it to Broadway, which is something so lovely. I have made a quantum leap".

In one of his interviews, he was asked what he'd like to do before he dies and he answered "Theater in Broadway" . The executive producer of "Les Miserables" read about it, called him for audition, and gave him the part when he saw Ricky's potential. In the musical adaptation of the classic by French poet, playwright and novelist Victor Hugo, he played Marius, an idealistic young student revolutionary in 19th century Paris.

The critics favoured him with laudatory commentary, citing his powerful stage presence, his acting ability, and his notable qualities as a singer.
